When you are back in Germany, after the wedding, you will need to do the following:

1. Update your information at the german civil registry. To do this you will need to bring your original marriage certificate.

2. Add your partner to your health insurance policy which is usually offered without additional costs.

3. You may be required to obtain a residence permit at the immigration department (For 1 to 3 years).  To obtain a residence permit you need to show the original or certified copy of marriage certificate incl. Apostille, your personal identification card or passport and your partner´s.  They may also request other documents.

4. At the civil registry you can apply for a family register (this way if you lose your marriage certificate a new one can be made).

5. After the marriage, if you would like to share one family name or have a compound name, you must get this change done in the country of your residence - at the responsible civil registry.
